Before she ever stepped into a care centre, Hazael Teh, Assistant Manager of JR Segamat Care Centre (JRSC), worked in a fast-paced world of operations, safety systems and daily targets. Eight years in mall management taught her how to run things efficiently, but it did not fully answer a deeper question she carried: “What kind of work truly matters to me?” That question slowly led her toward a path where her presence could change someone’s day, not just complete a task.
What draws her to this work is simple. She deeply respects the life stories seniors carry. To her, they are not just residents, but people who have lived, loved, struggled and grown. She believes they deserve kindness, patience and to be treated with dignity, no matter their condition.
In her daily work, she listens more than she speaks. She watches expressions, notices small changes, and tries to understand what each resident needs, even when words are hard to find. She believes dignity lives in small moments: gentle words, patience and never rushing someone who needs more time.
She also cares deeply for her team, because she knows good care begins with people who feel supported. By being present and approachable, she hopes her staff feel safe to ask, to learn and to grow. When caregivers feel cared for, they naturally pass that care on.
To Hazael, quality elderly care is not about perfection. It is about making seniors feel safe, respected and not alone. If a resident smiles, feels calm, or reaches out in trust, she knows she has done something right. That, to her, is what truly matters.
